Music Preparatory Academy Classes

There will be a special Open House on Saturday, December 30th, 2023 from 10:30-11:30. This is an opportunity to meet Emma Lindow and learn what the course will be like. Bring your children ages 3-6 for the chance to participate in fun music activities. For more information and for location please send an email to Emma Lindow (allthingsbright@protonmail.com).

Registration is due January 2, 2024.

Classes are designed for children ages 3-6 preparing them for piano or any other instrument they might be interested in. Classes are held weekly and will continue for approximately nine months. See tab tuition/fees for the cost. Classes are divided into two sections: 3-4 age group called the Mini Mozart class, and the 5-6 age group called the Mighty Mozart class.

I approach teaching young children music in the same way they learn to talk. In learning to speak children first observe other people talking, they mimic and make babbling sounds, they begin to speak words and later they learn to write those words. Frequently music educators approach teaching music using the written form first, e.g. “This is a quarter note. It gets one beat.” But for children to understand that they have to have experienced a beat first.

By contrast, I teach children to recognize and keep a steady beat through creative play. From there we move into rhythm using speech and poetry to create rhythms without having to read it yet. We learn to recognize high and low pitch and melody. The children have opportunities to create their own music improvise small musical sections that fit into a greater whole. Then we learn to write and read, using musical notation, what we have already been doing through creative play.

The Mini Mozart class (ages 3-4) will focus on:

  • Learning to keep a steady beat
  • Practice doing and creating rhythms
  • Understanding melody and pitch
  • Recognizing timbre and different instruments
  • Beginning to recognize notation.

To achieve this, we do a lot of moving to music and learning kinesthetically. We will also use small percussion instruments such as drums and like instruments as we practice music theory and skills.

This section will be held weekly on Mondays at 10:30 – 11:15 am. The first class will be held January 8th, 2024.

The Mighty Mozart class (ages 5-6) will practice the same skills as the Mini Mozart class, but we also learn notation and practice note reading. In this course we will use a workbook to learn music skills and practice writing using musical notation. I use a curriculum called Mini Music which I supplement with my own activities that I used as an elementary music teacher. For more information on mini music watch the video below.

This section will be held on Tuesdays 3:00 – 4:00 pm. The first class will be held January 9th, 2024.

I do ask that parents not regularly attend with their child. Small children tend to pay more attention to their parents when they are present. When parents are absent, I have the opportunity to fully engage their attention as we learn together.

To register, please send an email to allthingsbright@protonmail.com. Please include your name, phone number, your child’s name and birthdate. Each class is limited to eight children.
