Flute Lessons

When is My Child Ready to Learn to Play the Flute?

Because of the size of the flute and needing to hold it up to play, flute students need to start a little later than piano students. I recommend age nine as being the earliest. They need to be big enough to hold the flute without twisting their back or bending their head in a difficult position. If they are younger and eager to play I would recommend learning to play the recorder or fife, both of which are REAL instruments and are very similar to the flute. If you want to discuss any of these options for your child contact me to see what would best suit your child.

Curriculum

For beginning students I use Flute 101: Mastering the Basics by Phyllis Louke and Patricia George. We learn scales, theory and technique alongside the method book. Students can include songs they are interested in to supplement the curriculum. Once a student has finished the Flute 101 book, we move into repertoire books and duet books.

Included in the monthly tuition is a weekly 30-minute private lesson. (It can be longer if desired, but at a higher fee.) Included are 2-3 student recitals and three group lessons held throughout the year. Students can also participate in Federation, held in late winter/early spring. See Tution/Fees for more information on this subject.
